Background of the Study
Library resources are fundamental to the academic success of students, especially in fields like nursing where research, clinical knowledge, and continuous learning are essential. The University of Abuja College of Nursing provides library services that aim to support the educational needs of nursing students by offering access to textbooks, journals, electronic databases, and other academic materials. However, there has been ongoing concern regarding whether these resources are adequate to meet the growing demands of nursing students. Research indicates that adequate library resources, both physical and digital, contribute significantly to students' academic performance and engagement (Fagbemi et al., 2023).
In nursing education, access to up-to-date research materials, case studies, and evidence-based practice guidelines is vital for students to integrate theory with practice effectively. Given the rapid advancements in medical and nursing knowledge, it is essential for students to have access to a wide range of current resources. The role of the library extends beyond providing books and journals; it encompasses providing a conducive study environment, access to digital learning tools, and fostering academic collaboration through group study spaces. While the library is a crucial part of the educational infrastructure, students’ perceptions of the adequacy of these resources can impact their utilization and, consequently, their academic success (Alabi & Ogunlade, 2024).
Despite the importance of library resources, many students report facing challenges such as outdated materials, lack of access to sufficient online resources, and limited space for individual and group study. This study will investigate students’ perceptions of the adequacy of library resources in the University of Abuja College of Nursing and explore how these resources influence their academic engagement and performance.
Statement of the Problem
There has been limited research on the specific adequacy of library resources available to nursing students at the University of Abuja College of Nursing. The adequacy of library resources plays a crucial role in supporting students' learning, and it is important to assess whether these resources meet students' needs for effective study and research. This study aims to evaluate the perceptions of nursing students regarding the adequacy of library resources and identify areas where improvements can be made.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess nursing students’ perceptions of the adequacy of library resources at the University of Abuja College of Nursing.
2. To evaluate the impact of library resources on nursing students' academic performance and research capabilities.
3. To identify areas for improvement in the library resources to better support nursing students' learning.
Research Questions
1. What are nursing students’ perceptions of the adequacy of library resources at the University of Abuja College of Nursing?
2. How do library resources influence nursing students’ academic performance and research capabilities?
3. What improvements do nursing students suggest for the library resources at the University of Abuja College of Nursing?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nursing students at the University of Abuja College of Nursing perceive library resources as inadequate for their academic needs.
2. There is a significant relationship between the adequacy of library resources and academic performance among nursing students.
3. Nursing students suggest specific improvements for the enhancement of library resources that would support their learning needs.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at the University of Abuja College of Nursing and evaluate their perceptions of library resources. Limitations include the possibility of subjective biases in student responses and the challenge of quantifying perceptions about library resources.
